Maximum memory card capacity – indicates how much video the recorder will record. It is better not to skimp on memory cards and choose high-end devices – they will hang less.
It is also better to choose a larger capacity, since the lifespan of the flash drive depends on the write/erase cycles.
Number of cameras in the video recorder
It can reach two or three – one main and several additional. Additional cameras can be installed both for filming the situation from the outside (from the side, from behind) and inside the cabin.
Maximum control will be provided by a device with several cameras and a wide viewing angle.
GPS module
It can serve several functions: record location data in the video and allow the device to be used as a navigation device. Sometimes there is also a GPS informant – it notifies about speed control systems nearby.

Notifies about nearby radar installations. Optionally, it can work in “city”/“highway” modes with different sensitivity.
G-sensor
Protects data recorded in extreme situations. As soon as the recorder records sudden braking or an impact, the video of this moment is moved to a separate folder protected from erasure.
Night shooting mode
Adapts video to low-light conditions. The quality of this mode directly depends on the hardware characteristics — the matrix, processor and lens (a lens with a glass lens will introduce less distortion than with a plastic one).
Types of recorder mounts
They come in different varieties, from tape to special mounts on the mirror. When buying, think about how you will place the device in the car, and choose the mount depending on this.
The design of the recorder mounts can seriously affect the quality of the video. Remember, the fewer hinges and the more compact they are, the less shaking and trembling of the picture.
Rotating the body allows you to rotate the camera lens without removing the device from the mount.
The built-in battery allows the device to operate for some time without the on-board network, this is especially important for the night parking mode, when the device «wakes up» when the sensor detects movement.
The WiFi module of the device allows you to connect it to your phone, through the application, and watch the video on the phone.
Additional functions
Manufacturers often embellish the real advantages of their product by adding many additional functions that do not fully meet the main purpose of the device.
Such functions can be added in order to justify the price of a not very high-quality device and they can easily be sacrificed in favor of improving the main characteristics.
In the case of a video recorder, such features can be:
- Taking photos. In a critical situation, filming and photographing the scene of an accident is hardly convenient. In extreme cases, there is a phone for this, which is always at hand.
- Touch screen. Inconvenient to use, will be the first thing to be damaged by mechanical impact on the recorder.
- HDMI. It is unlikely that anyone will want to watch video from the recorder at home on a big screen. In court, only the memory card will be used and it will be included in the case.
- LED backlight. Should improve the quality of night shooting, but in reality it does not cope with this task very well.
